Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based approach to the religious formation of children ages 3-12, based on the pillars of Scripture and Liturgy. Children gather in a carefully prepared environment, called the Atrium, where they and their adult catechist(s) can hear, ponder, and celebrate the mysteries of their Catholic faith. There, the children work with beautiful materials that invite them to enter more fully into the liturgical celebrations of the Church as well as meditating deeply into the Scriptures proclaimed. Much like a children’s Chapel, the Atrium nurtures the children’s life of prayer, contemplation, and their relationship with God.
At St. Monica, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd supplements the Family Faith Formation program, offering weekly atrium sessions for children ages 3-6 in the Level 1 Atrium, and Sacramental Preparation for children preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion in the Level 2 Atrium.
Prayerfully consider joining the group of St. Monica CGS catechists! CGS offers retreat-like formation for adults, sponsored by our Archdiocese, that nourishes the spiritual life of the adult while preparing him/her to serve the child. Check with the parish office or the Oklahoma City Archdiocese for updated information; formation courses are being planned and will be offered soon.
The Atrium also needs adult volunteers to assist and support the catechists and the work in the Atrium. If you would like to volunteer as an Atrium assistant to the catechist, or if you have gifts and talents, such as woodworking, drawing/painting, sewing, or if you would like to share your time by helping us with cutting supplies and other needs, please contact the parish office.
